Wednesday Q&A – 11/10/21

Welcome to the place where your two bloggers ask each other one question each week. We hope you enjoy them as your learn a bit more about us – sometimes we even learn more about each other!

Ray’s question to Karen:

Q: Steamed clams – awesome or gross?

A: I’m not sure if I’ve had them? I do like them deep fried. I’m not a fan of clam chowder, so possibly not. Many years ago Tom took me to The Spanish Tavern, and I ordered Paella, which probably included clams and was delicious. So, I’m not sure how I feel about steamed clams. I guess I’ll have to try them one day just to check!

Karen’s Question to Ray:

Q: Monkfish is called “the poor man’s lobster”. Have you ever eaten it?

A: I haven’t had it, but ironically I do have a story involving monkfish and the very same Spanish Tavern you mentioned in your answer above! My father wasn’t really the kind of guy that was into going to restaurants that often, but he read about The Spanish Tavern and for some reason he really wanted to go and treat us all to dinner.

Naturally that included my grandma, his mother in-law. Grandma (yes, grandma of Angie’s kitchen) was a very sweet lady and always tried not to take advantage of someone’s generosity. Despite my father telling her to order anything she liked, she chose monkfish. We were certain she chose it because it was the cheapest item on the menu, but she swore that she loved it!

Her daughter, my mom, even said to her “mom, I’ve never seen you eat monkfish! You really can get whatever you like.” But she wouldn’t change her order still insisting that she loved it. That story always makes me smile because it was a funny moment, but also because it really showcased the kind and thoughtful heart she had.

A few years ago when our oldest niece got married she hosted the rehearsal dinner at the same restaurant and of course it brought that story to mind once again. All I had to do was say my sister “is monkfish one of the menu choices this evening?” and she immediately knew what I meant!
